Rose to the Occasion
Greeley Girls Basketball
The Greeley Girls Varsity Basketball team trained vigorously this preseason to come out strong for their first few games. Playing two of the toughest teams in the league (Rye and Ketcham), the girls started off their season 2-3, but after huge wins against tough teams like Ossining, Fox Lane, and Carmel, the Quakers ended their regular season at a respectable 10-10 as the 12th seed in Class A.
This year, the Girls Varsity team has twelve members: six sophomores, five juniors, and one senior. Double varsity athlete (playing volleyball in the fall) and senior captain Emma Rose, recently announced her commitment to playing Division III basketball at R.I.T. The Quake asked Rose what it was like to be the only senior on the team. She explained, “It’s definitely weird, especially with the transition from volleyball to basketball with four seniors on the volleyball team to only one senior on the basketball team. But, it’s really cool. I like the leadership role and feeling like a big sister to everyone.” Rose embraced being seen as a role model to the rest of this young roster, allowing her to bond with each player on a deeper level. The underclassmen on the team looked up to Rose as not only their team captain, but also as a regionally-recognized and extremely talented player. Given her love for the sport and all of the hard work she’s put in these past four years, it’s no surprise that Rose will continue to play basketball at the college level.
Rose has also cultivated a sense of team camaraderie, which can make or break a team’s success. The technical dynamic of the GBall team combined with their team spirit allowed them to work together as a unit. They operated together, persevered together, won together, and even lost together.
The Greeley Girls Basketball team strives to surpass all expectations. As GBall continues to succeed in the heat of battle, it’s safe to say they feel good about their chances against any opponent under the leadership of players like Emma Rose.
