Through my experience with art social media, I have noticed a lack of illustrations that depict diverse cultures and representation. As a result, I wanted to explore unfamiliar cultures and integrate my understanding into my own unique style, which led to the creation of this piece.
This illustration, titled Glamorous, presented me with various challenges. Prior to creating this piece, I was unfamiliar with the traditional attire and jewelry worn by the character. The focal points in this piece, such as detailed rendering, accurate values, and lighting, were all areas where I struggled.
However, the most significant challenges that this piece presented to me were patience and time. I lacked experience in many aspects of this piece and often felt like giving up and abandoning it. Due to imposter syndrome, it was challenging for me to reach a point where I was satisfied with this piece. It went through several stages and modifications before I considered it presentable. Often, when I come up with an idea for a potential illustration, my execution of it doesn’t align with my initial concept. The gap between conception and implementation is a persistent challenge. While I believe that this struggle is a shared burden among artists, I found satisfaction in the process of identifying the changes and improvements necessary for my own contentment.
With every piece of art, I strive to challenge myself with something new. The challenges posed by Glamorous included depicting a culture that was new to me, and in technical terms, maintaining the persistence to refine details and enliven the character. Through the creation process, I was able to overcome these challenges and learn a lot from them.
