Years from now, when your future children ask, “What did you wear in 2023?”, what items will you fondly remember? With the ever-changing nature of the fashion industry, microtrends and individual styles have become more prominent than ever before. Read more to see the top 5 trends of 2023.
Adidas Samba & Campus Sneakers
Many decided to ditch their old beat-up Nike Air Force 1 sneakers and replace them with Adidas Samba sneakers. From Kendall Jenner to Hailey Rhode Beiber, the sneaker encapsulated the “model off-duty” aesthetic. It was truly the “it” sneaker of the year. The regular Samba color was not only sold out for months at a time, but when the new and upcoming brand Sporty and Rich collaborated with them in November, the shoe sold out in seconds. During the early fall, the Adidas Campus shoe also skyrocketed in popularity. The Campus sneaker differs from the Samba in that it lacks leather covering towards the toe. Available in many gorgeous colorways, the Campus was a hit for all demographics. While it didn’t receive as much celebrity attention as the Samba, the Campus did go viral on TikTok.
Denim
Every year, the styles of denim that are acceptable to wear change drastically. This year, flare and baggy jeans dominated the market. Not only that, but long jean skirts, now seen as sophisticated and stylish, came into style in the late Spring of 2023. Celebrities like Rihanna and Katie Holmes were spotted in these skirts during the fall as a transitional piece to the winter. If you are looking for a trendy pair of jeans, you can find them at Levi’s, Mango, or Agolde.
Coquette
This past year has been the year of femininity. From the popularity of the color pink to the virality of the bow trend online, the feminine “coquette” aesthetic has taken over the internet. Data from Pinterest indicates that searches for “bow aesthetic” are up by 55% from last year, and there is a 190% uptick for the phrase “bow outfit.” Moreover, designers such as Sandy Liang have popularized this trend through jewelry, and many have opted to add pink satin laces to their sneakers as a more understated look. Outside of fashion, the coquette TikTok trend went on to add bows on food and even on pets too. Out of the trends listed, the coquette seems to continue into 2024. Enjoy it while it lasts!
The Color Red
By far, red is the most popular color of the year. Statement pieces such as small shoulder bags and the addition of red nail polish were widely adopted. Alix Earle even started a trend in the late fall with her cranberry-colored nails that took both Gen Z and Millenials by storm. In many fast fashion stores such as Zara and H&M, the color stayed prevalent throughout the year, which is rare as fashion trends change quickly due to microtrends. In the winter of 2023, red dominated many major runway shows such as Alexander McQueen and Valentino. In the past year, Kim Kardashian was spotted wearing a monochromatic red look that attracted much attention, and Emily Ratajkowski was spotted with many red accents such as red lipstick and rosettes on her clothing.
Quiet Luxury
After her wedding at the luxurious Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Southern France, Sofia Richie Grainge became the “it girl” of 2023. The most popular trend she started in the past year was the quiet luxury look. Quiet Luxury refers to an understated elegant vibe without noticeable signs of wealth displayed. Many fast fashion brands such as Stradivarius, H&M, and Zara have all encapsulated the look in their most recent clothing drops. In an interview with Who What Wear, Grainge stated that “Quiet luxury, the term, it sounds nice, so I’m not knocking it.” While this trend may have been a shock to Grainge, it can be all accredited to her stylist Liat Baruch, who often described her look in one word: timeless.
