The Horace Greeley boys’ wrestling team is back for another season! This winter, the team has high expectations and hopes to win both leagues and sectionals. The team has competed in multiple tournaments and has found immense success with several wrestlers winning individual medals. The team currently has a winning record and will continue to maintain its success until the end of the season in February. On Senior Night, the team achieved a dominant 44-18 victory over White Plains with an outstanding team performance, showcasing the team’s unique skills and abilities.
I spoke with junior wrestler Lucas Saland and asked him how his team has found success. Saland stated, “Our team chemistry is amazing, and we have a very skilled team. We are all enjoying this season, and our hopes are high. We all have goals to achieve, and as a team, we are going to work towards them to the best of our ability.” Saland credits the success to both the players and the experienced coaches. “These coaches are the best of the best and are fully committed to this team. It is hard to describe how big of an impact they have had on our team’s success this season.”
This past December, the team traveled to the Bronx for their annual trip to the P10X school. The P10X school does not have its own wrestling program, so this trip provides an opportunity for students from both schools to enjoy some fun and friendly competition. The P10X school specializes in special education and holds around 75 students. After the event, the team handed out gifts to the students, each tailored to their individual interests. Coach Anthony Tortoa worked at this school for many years and hopes to continue making this trip on an annual basis. Junior wrestler William Fetzer stated, “Every year we give presents to the students at P10x and wrestle with them for a day around Christmas time. It feels amazing to have the opportunity to help out this community and truly make a difference. It really shows how fortunate we are here in Chappaqua and how we all have the ability to help others.”
Looking ahead, the team hopes to continue this momentum into leagues and sectionals, with high hopes of winning it all.
