In a stunning display of athleticism and teamwork, the Greeley Girls Varsity Tennis team defeated Scarsdale 5-2 on September 17, ending the reigning champions’ impressive five-year, 85-match winning streak. Scarsdale, the state champions of 2021, 2022, and 2023, presented a formidable challenge, but Greeley has shown remarkable strength this season and is poised to face Scarsdale again this weekend in the Section 1 Team Tournament.
Under the insightful guidance of beloved Coach John Alkalay, the girls have formed inseparable bonds and have made significant progress through hours of hard work and practice. This season, Greeley remains undefeated and proudly holds the title of 2024 League Champions. The team is eagerly looking forward to the journey to states, ready to represent Greeley with pride.
The matches against Scarsdale drew commentary from players and spectators alike. Captain Allison Tsai, a senior and one of the team’s standout singles players, engaged in a fiercely competitive match. “I decided I was going to play my game through all the ups and downs, see where it goes, and have fun doing it,” she said. Her positivity shone through, especially as her teammates rallied to support her. “I’m extremely proud of our 5-2 win against Scarsdale,” she reflected.
In the doubles matches, Captain Meadow Zhang and freshman Scarlett McFadzen showcased their talent and resilience. “We went into the match with a lot of nerves, and the first few games were shaky. But once we settled in, we just played our game,” they recounted. Their confidence paid off with a decisive straight-set victory of 6-1, 6-2.
Sophia Knapp, a spectator, shared her experience watching Emma Knapp and Sadie McFadzen compete, “Watching the match was very nerve-racking, especially during the first few games when they were down 3-0. But they raised their level, executed strategic plays, and persevered.” The duo turned the tide and triumphed with a score of 6-3, 6-2.
Captain Isla Gibb expressed pride in the team’s achievements, saying, “We really worked hard as a team to capture two wins this season against the three-time defending state champs! Our efforts and determination have brought us closer on and off the court. Now it’s time for us to bring home the state championship.”
With an extraordinary season unfolding, the Greeley Girls Tennis team is excitedly anticipating sectionals, regionals, and the hopeful pursuit of the 2024 State Championships.
