This year, Horace Greeley has introduced its new advisory program and several new courses to the student body. Another addition that students and staff can look forward to each week is a new episode of Greeley News Today (GNT). A rebranding of Greeley’s regular morning announcements, GNT is a pre-recorded news show shot in the Global Learning Center’s multimedia studio. The show has featured various segments covering the annual Fall Family Gathering, the homecoming football game, magazine Science Greeley’s recent accolades, and Yom Kippur.
In these episodes, members of the Greeley faculty and student body hear directly from dedicated students. Juniors Noah E. and Warren F. are the hosts of GNT. They work each week to put together stories, highlight student success, and edit the feature to give it a cable news feel. Noah says, “Greeley News Today was formed after we were inspired from the success of the newscast produced on Opening Day to the district’s staff, faculty and administration.” He shares, “Each week we meet with Ms. Olmo, and talk about the upcoming events that are happening at Greeley. We then do our interviews from the multimedia studio or go to the location of the story to get our interviews. We record our anchor segment, edit all of the clips together and make it into one newscast.”
GNT has also featured faculty members and administrators who are excited to speak with the anchors. Band teacher Mr. Stroffolino and Assistant Principal Ms. Mauricio are two faculty members who have made appearances on the newscast and discussed various events that occurred in September. Student Life Coordinator Ms. Olmo is also involved in the production of GNT. She says, “The creation of the new TV and podcasting studio and interest coming out of the middle school showed us that this show was something the students really wanted to create. We try to look at everything that is going on within a cycle, and either cover it in real time or recap the event after it happens. Our overall goal is to showcase all of the different voices and communities within our school.”
GNT brings the school community up to date on many of the happenings at Greeley, trying to help students and faculty alike gain a better understanding of the town’s community. The show is a testament to the hard work put in behind the scenes by students and faculty and brings a new voice to the halls of Greeley.
