New York City is home to a diverse range of museums, from history and science to art and music, many of which have rotating and visiting exhibitions. The new year is a perfect time to visit new exhibits scattered across New York City. Some of the most interesting recently opened or soon-to-open exhibits are listed below, along with ticket and address information for easy access.
Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum: https://www.guggenheim.org/
At the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum located at 1071 5th Ave, Brazilian artist Beatriz Mihazes’ pieces will be displayed in the exhibit “Collection in Focus: Beatriz Milhazes – Rigor and Beauty”. Mihazes is known for her geometric, vibrant abstractions made with acrylic paint. Brazilian culture is a big part of Mihazes’ artwork as she combines cultural elements with modernism to craft her extraordinary pieces. At the exhibit, Mihazes’ artworks are made using the technique of monotransfer—painting on clear prints and allowing them to dry, and then pressing them onto the canvas to create a reverse image of the original shapes. The exhibit will be available at the Guggenheim (New York) from March 7 to September 7, 2025. The tickets are generally $30 for adults and $19 for students (must have student ID).
The Frick Collection: https://www.nyhistory.org/
The Frick Collection is located at 1 East 70th Street, and the building itself is an amazing example of Gilded Age architecture. The Frick mansion was owned by Henry Clay Frick, a wealthy industrialist and art patron. Frick wanted the mansion to be a museum when he passed away, and it opened as a museum in the 1930s. It has recently been closed as it underwent a $290 million renovation that would allow visitors to access the second floor of the mansion for the first time (temporarily located to midtown). The museum has a large variety of European paintings and decorative arts. It is scheduled to reopen in April 2025.
New York Historical Society: https://www.frick.org/
Showcased at the New York Historical Society on 170 Central Park W Street is the exhibit “Real Clothes, Real Lives: 200 Years of What Women Wore, the Smith College Historic Clothing Collection.” The exhibit was supported by the Coby Foundation, Smith College, MAE Foundation, and Friends of the Historical Clothing Collection. Opened to the public on September 27, 2024, the collection consists of various women’s clothing from the past 200 years. Many of the displayed outfits focus on the everyday lives of women in different periods of history, depicting how life has changed for the average woman, from vocational changes to progressions in clothing trends. The exhibit truly allows the viewer to look past the article of clothing and instead dig deeper into what these pieces reveal. Tickets to the New York Historical Society are $24 for adults and $13 for students (must have student ID).
