Greeley Baseball Rolls Past Ossining Behind McGuire’s Gem and Early Offensive Burst: Ossining @ Quakers – April 14
On Monday, April 14th, Horace Greeley (3-2) faced off against Ossining (1-3) in a non-league matchup. This season, despite falling to an 0-2 start, Greeley had won two straight games coming into this contest and now had a chip on their shoulder. On the other hand, Ossining was desperate for a win after a 1-2 start.
In the top of the first inning, Ossining got ahead early on a passed ball. Junior Joe McGuire then proceeded to strike out two batters, ending the inning. After falling behind early, Greeley responded with an offensive explosion. Senior star Cole Stein reached on an error, followed by a Rhys Herrell walk that pushed a runner into scoring position. A textbook bunt single by Spencer Walden and a sacrifice fly by Ben Falk put Greeley on the board. After a Jack Porter walk, Ben Lederman roped a line drive to center field, scoring two more runs for the Quakers. An error on a ground ball to the shortstop scored the final two runs of the inning, tallying the score to 5-1.
In the second inning, McGuire responded with a 1-2-3 frame, and Greeley continued their hitting masterclass in the bottom half. Another reached-on-error by Cole Stein and a walk by Rhys Herrell put Greeley in a great position to start the inning. Ben Falk then smashed a triple and went on to score after a balk, improving the score to 8-1.
Throughout the next couple of innings, McGuire continued to dominate. A three-base error and an RBI by Rhys Herrell put the Quakers up by nine, where they remained for the rest of the game. Freshman Robert Hickey closed the game, allowing zero runs and zero hits.
McGuire finished with a statline of 6 IP, 7 K, 1 ER, 2 BB, and 4 H. If McGuire continues to perform like this, he could be a key component to Greeley’s success this season. Sophomore Jack Porter had an incredibly disciplined game at the plate, tallying four walks. Senior Ben Falk continued to crush the ball with three RBIs, improving his batting average to .353. Besides Falk, Spencer Walden and Ben Lederman also recorded hits.
After a rough start to the season, the tides have certainly turned. Greeley now has three straight wins and has significantly improved with the bats, previewing great things to come for the rest of the season.
