Dropping the Hammer

This past fall, Greeley hosted a variety of sporting events, including football, soccer, swimming, field hockey, and volleyball. Some people, however, may fail to consider the more obscure sports that take place at Greeley. Daniel Ye, a current Horace Greeley 10th grader, sat down with The Greeley Voice and spoke about his somewhat unusual extracurricular activity of hammer throwing. Ye talked about his passion for the sport which is often overlooked in high school athletics.
Originally, Ye competed in throwing discus. Towards the end of the season he met two former Greeley graduates and current hammer throwers: Keegan Li, who attends Columbia University and Kira Linder, who attends the University of Pennsylvania. This inspired Ye to begin hammer throwing, hoping it could help him get into a better college. Ye had to undergo a transition from competing in discus to hammer throwing; both track and field events, the discus throw involves a round disc, while the hammer throw entails a metal ball attached to a steel wire.
Ye became motivated to start taking hammer throwing seriously this past summer. He participated in weight throw for Greeley, an indoor version of hammer throw, and is looking forward to competing for Greeley in the 2023 spring track and field season as a weight thrower. Ye hopes to gain more respect and attention to the unique sport of hammer throw that many aren’t aware of. The Greeley Voice will certainly be following his progress in the future.
