Fielding Success
The Greeley Girls Varsity Field Hockey Team had an extremely successful season in 2022, doing it all with only two seniors. The girls finished 14-2-2 but fell to a strong Rye team in the section semifinals. Shocking many people this season with their performance, the team finished the regular season as the section’s second-best team. They had numerous noteworthy performances during the regular season, but tying the former top-seeded Scarsdale club and defeating the talented Mamaroneck team ranked highly amongst their accolades. However, this team’s two veteran leaders, and tremendous youthful talent, are what really stood out.
The Greeley Voice had a chance to sit down with sophomore Aidan Lane to discuss this year’s season. After a tough loss to Rye in the sectional semi-finals, Lane explained, “Although we were devastated, we celebrated our successful season and recognized the dedication and drive this team had.” Lane also spoke on one of the team’s standout moments from this season; the team’s victory over Mamaroneck, who was ranked second by LoHud Sports. While many questioned their ability to defeat this talented team, they triumphed to a thrilling 1-0 victory. Additionally, an exciting match against first-ranked Scarsdale put their abilities as a team to the test. They were determined to show that they could win despite being the underdogs. Even though they tied, the fierce competition made it a game to remember.
Lane noted the extraordinary talent of her teammates; the Girls Field Hockey squad won a number of awards at the end of their campaign. All-State honors were given to Stephanie Novick (senior), Dani Halperin (junior), and Nina Byrne (sophomore). All Section honors went to Novick, Halperin, Byrne, and up-and-coming Phoebe Warshaw (freshman). Alyssa Rose (junior), Eve Rutman, and Abby Dolan (junior) all received honorable mentions for the entire section.
Finally, Lane attested to the immense support and praise for the team’s two coaches, crediting them for the team’s success this season. Lane stated, “Sukhi and Britt have been tough on each player, but their toughness comes from a spot of wanting success for each of us. Their coaching styles challenge all of us and push us to fix our mistakes and improve. There is no doubt that as a whole and individually, we have improved since the beginning of the season because of their coaching”.
All in all, the Greeley Girls Field Hockey Team had an extremely impressive season and shocked a lot of people. We wish them an amazing offseason and know they will be back and better than ever next year.
