Team Evolution
The Greeley Girls Varsity Soccer team, commonly abbreviated as GSOC, had a terrific offseason full of enjoyable practices which prepared them well for their 2022–23 fall season. With many returning girls and ten new players, GSOC created strong team camaraderie and developed unique bonds with each member. Senior captains Hannah Fetzer, Fiona Brown, Sydney Mikeskell, and Ramsey Edson take pride in their spirit and accredit their overall success to the team unity they built this year.
However, there were also some changes that led the girls to an incredibly successful season: the new roles in the coaching staff. Mrs. McKie, a new assistant coach who teaches social studies, joined the squad, and Ms. Russo, a chemistry teacher and former GSOC assistant coach, was promoted to head coach.
The Greeley Voice was fortunate enough to sit down with senior captain and midfielder Ramsey Edson; we spoke extensively about how Greeley’s new coaches have impacted the team, and how they may have influenced their performance. Edson confidently stated that “[the team] adore[s] both of our instructors this year. Because she is so athletic and gives us terrific workouts and strength exercises, Russo has given our team a new dimension.” Edson noted that Coach Russo is also highly familiar with the group and has been the biggest supporter of the girls through all of their matches this fall. Edson adds that Mrs. McKie has helped the squad comfortably transition and adjust to the new coaches this year, which contributed to GSOC’s triumphant season. According to Edson, “Mrs. McKie and Ms. Russo are two of the best coaches GSOC has ever had,” adding that her team shares the same sentiment.
After GSOC’s success in 2021, The Greeley Voice also asked Edson about the team’s achievements this past fall. Edson has had an incredible senior year season as well, scoring 22 goals and contributing 11 assists in just the first 14 games of the season, earning her the Conference Player of the Year and All-Section awards. Edson noted that “the girls have been dominant in their games. We made it to the second round of playoffs, and ended the season with a score of 13-4.”
Although the Greeley Girls Varsity Soccer team has faced changes, GSOC attained a fantastic season. The girls had a strong start to the regular season and demonstrated consistency throughout their league matches and postseason. With the support of Greeley’s community, there is no doubt that GSOC’s renewed team led by Coach Russo and Coach McKie will continue their pattern of success in years to come.
