Tom Homan, or “border czar,” recently announced that 700 federal agents will be leaving Minnesota. Homan believed that he had seen “significant progress” in local government cooperation with federal agencies. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said, ‘Today’s announcement is a step in the right direction, but we need a faster and larger drawdown of forces, state-led investigations into the killings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good, and an end to this campaign of retribution.”
This change will be effective immediately, though Homan reports that around 2,000 ICE officers still remain in the state. The recent coordination between local jails and ICE has reassured the federal government that they will be able to target all “criminals” that presently circulate the nation.
President Trump told NBC to “…give us the murderers that they’re holding and all of the bad people, drug dealers, all of the bad people.” Yet, he also said he feels the Trump Administration could use a “softer touch.”
Since these measures have been announced and put into place, masked, heavily armed officers have been met with much resistance from angered residents who are dissatisfied with ICE’s aggressive tactics, according to AP News. This resistance is likely to continue in the coming weeks.
