Unified Basketball successfully brought together the Horace Greeley community on April 23, as students and teachers filled the gym and supported the team during the school day. This school-wide event took place in the gym and saw the united team pitted against Byram Hills High School. The day, titled Unified Day, was designated with a special class-schedule so academic classes could end early. Before the game, advisory classes filled with 9-11th graders made posters and signs for the players. These game preparations built school-wide excitement, even before the players headed on the court. As the teams entered the gym, students and teachers filled the stands, cheering for every basket, shot, and play; the positive energy was felt throughout the entire gym.
Although Greeley ultimately lost the game, the energy in the gym remained spirited from the start to the buzzer. Many of Greeley’s own players scored throughout the matchup, especially Jabril H. and Juliette I., who made multiple shots that energized the crowd. During halftime, the gym even engaged in a YMCA, with everyone dancing together to the song blasting through the speakers. Most importantly, the game highlighted the purpose of Unified Sports. This occasion bonded students together in an environment of inclusion, teamwork, and a consistent community. Unified Day provided a meaningful opportunity for students from different groups in the school to connect and support one another.
11th grader and Unified Basketball player Charlie B. shared, “I really enjoy being part of the Unified Basketball team where everyone is granted the chance to feel included and supported. Through this tight-knit community, I have built friendships and spent time with such an amazing group of students.” 11th grade player Maya N. added, “Unified Day was so much more than just a basketball game. As a member of the team, it was amazing to see how it brought everyone in the school together in a supportive and inclusive environment.”
From the advisory poster-making to the packed gym during the game, this event represents how Unified Sports is more than a wonderful athletic outlet at Greeley; this team environment has created an atmosphere where students and teachers can come together to celebrate school spirit, while emphasizing the value of supporting every member of the community.
