The Greeley girls’ varsity tennis team delivered an outstanding performance at the Hills Autumn Invitational tournament in Long Island last month. The team won the championship title, defeating Commack, Port Washington, and their rival, Syosset, whom they had also beaten in last year’s state final.
The girls now have a lot of momentum, which they hope will help them win both the state and the sectional title. The grind for these accolades will begin soon, as Sectional Individuals begin the weekend of October 11th, and Team Sectionals begin the weekend of October 18th. After recently capturing another league title, the team feels confident, ready, and determined to defend their titles and return to the top.
“Winning the Half Hollows Tournament was a really good feeling,” said Captain Sadie M. “The competition was solid across the board, and it pushed us in the right ways. It gave us a boost of confidence but also showed us what we still need to tighten up before sectionals, regionals, and hopefully states. It was a great way to see where we’re at and what we’re working toward.” Emma K. added, “It was so wonderful to see everyone so engaged in empowering one another on and off the court. We hope to go back and compete at the Hills Autumn Invitational next season.”
A standout match came from doubles players Hannah K. and Charlotte W., who faced a strong Commack pairing. After dropping the first set, Hannah and Charlotee showed impressive resilience, rallying to win the next two sets in a thrilling tie break to win the match (3-5, 4-2, 10-8). Their victory highlights the team’s grit, determination, and confidence in continued success.
