After a tough six-goal loss to open the season, Greeley Boys soccer has been dominating ever since. Following the setback, the Quakers went on an impressive five-game win streak, including victories over tough opponents such as Gorton High School. Since then, they have won four of their last seven matches and currently sit with only one loss on the record. They stand in second place in Class AA of Section One. Senior Henry H. leads the team with seven goals, while Senior Sam M. tops the squad in goal contributions with twelve.
In August, the Horace Greeley Soccer program was rebuilding from the ground up. With Coach O’Neill entering his first season with the program, the team’s priority was to build strong bonds and establish chemistry on and off the field. When asked about the transition to Coach O’Neill, star defender Noah Z. said, “The transition has been amazing. We have grown as a team since he’s been coaching, and he’s doing a great job.” Over the summer, the team practiced routinely to focus on improving chemistry. Noah told us that Coach O’Neill always reminded the team to “win August” to win later in the season. It has certainly appeared that the mindset has paid off with their tremendous success this year.
When asked how the team was able to bounce back from the opening loss, Noah explained, “We have been doing our best to work as hard as we can since the opening game. We always keep that Mahopac game fresh in our minds.” This mindset helped fuel Greeley in our 1-0 win over our rival, Fox Lane. Noah said, “Our Fox Lane game was definitely the best game we played this season. We came to their home field, they thought they were going to win, and we stayed calm and followed through in a hard-fought game”.
Now, the Quakers are 9-1-3 heading into the final stretch of the season with one goal in mind—winning the section. On October 14th, Greeley played the 9-2-2 Harrison Huskies, looking for another dominant win to add to their resume.
